Empowering Communities through Positive Psychology: The Legacy of the HAPPINESS Project
Communities flourish when people feel connected, supported and actively involved. This vision has guided HAPPINESS – Positive Psychology & Community Resilience, an Erasmus+ project that is now approaching its final stage after months of international cooperation, educational activities and community engagement.
Projects for Europe (PFE) has been proud to contribute to this partnership, demonstrating how non-formal education can strengthen emotional well-being, social inclusion and active citizenship.
A European Partnership for Resilient Communities
The project brought together organisations from Italy, Spain and Belgium with the shared objective of developing innovative educational tools that help adults build resilience, strengthen relationships and encourage community participation.
Rather than adopting a therapeutic or clinical perspective, the project focused on an educational approach based on positive psychology, participatory learning and community engagement. Throughout the project, participants explored methodologies that promote empathy, active listening, cooperation and shared responsibility.
Practical Resources for Adult Education
One of the project’s most significant achievements has been the development of practical educational resources designed to remain useful long after the project’s completion.
These include the Happiness Toolkit, providing guidance and practical activities for educators and facilitators; the Community Emotional Map, an innovative methodology connecting individual experiences with community resources; the Community of Practice, an online collaborative environment where professionals and participants can continue exchanging experiences and good practices; and a wide range of multilingual educational materials supporting adult education across different contexts.
All these resources have been designed to be transferable, adaptable and easily integrated into future educational initiatives.
PFE’s Contribution
Within the consortium, Projects for Europe played an important role in quality assurance, impact evaluation and dissemination activities.
PFE also organised an online learning activity for adults living in Belgium, creating a collaborative environment where participants reflected on emotional well-being, resilience, social inclusion and community engagement through participatory methodologies.
The evaluation coordinated by PFE produced highly positive results, with an overall satisfaction score of 4.95 out of 5, confirming both the effectiveness of the educational methodology and the strong appreciation expressed by participants.
Looking Ahead
Although the project is approaching its official conclusion, its legacy will continue.
The consortium has agreed to continue promoting the Toolkit, the Community Emotional Map and the Community of Practice, ensuring that these resources can support future Erasmus+ projects, adult education initiatives and community development activities across Europe.
The HAPPINESS project demonstrates how European cooperation can produce practical educational tools that foster well-being, strengthen social cohesion and contribute to more resilient, inclusive and connected communities.
